LifeCasting FAQ:
What do you use?
A material called alginate. It is a seaweed based powder that when mixed with water sets into a rubber.
Once the alginate is applied and set to a rubber texture, a plaster casing is then created over the alginate to hold the mould in place before it is removed and ready for casting.
How long does it take?
It takes approximately thirty minutes for an average sized casting.
Does it hurt?
Not at all. Most people describe it as an unusual or interesting sensation, bordering on pleasant!
Is it safe?
Alginate is designed to be used inside the mouth by dentists and is completely skin safe. I use an Alja-Safe® alginate this means that the alginate does not contain crystalline silica (a known carcinogen).
Do I need to make an appointment?
Yes, you will need an appointment. Just phone or email me with what you are interested in and when you would like to have your appointment.
How do I pay?
I don't take cards, so payment is by cash or bank transfer. Normal practice is to pay half at the casting appointment, and the remainder on collection of the finished cast.
What should I wear?
Wear loose-fitting clothes appropriate for a workshop environment. Depending on what you're having cast don't wear a bra or knickers or anything with elastic on or near the selected area prior to your appointment, elastic leaves marks in the skin.
How long does it take to get a finished sculpture?
That depends on what you've had done but most castings take approximately four weeks from the moulding process.
